The project is placed on water, on the river Tejo. In relation to the city is positioned on the axis of Avenida Dom Carlos I, in order to create a “boulevard building.”

The project is conceived as an addition of volumes organised around the central cubeshaped void, the hearth of the project, the auditorium of the opera house.

 

The volumes that overlook the auditorium embody all the functions requisite to operating the stage machinery (control room, loges, etc.) ; those located around the perimeter house the public and commercial functions (bookshop, theater school, coffee shop, luthier, etc.).

 

Between these two rings of volumes there is the walk, the road that connects outside, voids for the performance and the core of the Opera Hall.

Each volume is self-sufficient, it’s served in the strict necessary (bathrooms, access, circulation, etc.), the division is flexible and adaptable depending on the customer. The principle of superposition allows me to create the texture of the floor, exposed concrete.

The purity of the empty cubic opposes and is denied by the undefined and timeless result of the external shape.
